# Choose builder profile categories you can defend

Choose Google Business Profile categories from the work you sign contracts for. The primary category names the core business. A secondary category earns its place only as a separate service line you staff today and explain on your website. One detached garage does not make you a garage builder. Check current labels in [Google Business Profile](/glossary/google-business-profile/) Help first.

## What is a profile category supposed to communicate?

A category gives Google a short description of the business. It is not your [positioning](/articles/positioning/) statement, a keyword list or a stand-in for service pages. For a custom builder it reflects the main contract relationship and the work a buyer can hire you to do.

### Start with the operating model

Pull the contract, the [operating profile](/glossary/operating-profile/) and the current pipeline. Do you build on client-owned lots, sell completed specs, run design-build or carry a separate remodeling line? Those distinctions matter more than a competitor's category stack.

The [profile setup sequence](/articles/local-presence/google-business-profile-setup-for-builders/) puts categories after the ownership and location decisions, so the category discussion stays tied to a real business record.

## How should a builder choose the primary category?

Pick the primary label that describes your central contracted work. Check the current options and guidance in Google Business Profile Help. Then test the choice against contracts, website pages, phone inquiries and what the team says in the first process meeting.

### Use evidence, not aspiration

| Operating evidence | Question to ask | What it prevents |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Signed contract types | What work is the company hired to deliver? | A category based on a side capability |
| Website service pages | Can a buyer read a complete explanation of this service? | A label with no supporting content |
| Current pipeline | What kinds of projects are actively pursued? | A category left over from an old model |
| Staff responsibility | Who qualifies and manages this inquiry? | Calls no one is prepared to handle |
| Job-site reality | Do plan review, selections, draws and warranty match the claim? | Broad language that operations cannot support |

If two labels fit, choose the one that best describes the main revenue-producing service. Record the alternative and why you rejected it. That note helps when the business model or Google's options change.

## When do secondary categories make sense?

A secondary category is worth adding when it names a distinct service line that is current, staffed and explained on the [owned website](/process/owned-website/). It is not worth adding because one completed project fits the label. One unusual addition, one detached structure or one teardown does not describe a service you market.

### Run each option through a short review

1. Confirm the category is currently available in the platform.

2. Identify the real service, contract or project type it represents.

3. Find the owned page that explains scope, exclusions and process.

4. Name the person who will qualify inquiries from that category.

5. Check that the service fits the current geographic and trade capacity.

6. Record approval and the next review point in the profile register.

If the team cannot finish those checks, leave the category unresolved in the register. Note the missing evidence and who has to confirm it.

## How do categories relate to services and website pages?

Categories set broad identity. Profile services and owned pages carry the detail. A buyer with an [infill lot](/glossary/infill-lot/) needs to know how you handle the existing structure, access, plan fit and due diligence. A category cannot answer that.

### Keep the public surfaces in agreement

Read the category beside the homepage, the service pages, the process page and the first-call script. The words can differ. They should describe the same company. If the category implies a service the website never mentions, settle the mismatch before you add more profile content.

The [Search presence stage](/process/search-presence/) treats categories, citations, maps and association listings as one maintained record. The [Google Business Profile guide](/guides/google-business-profile-for-builders/) explains how that record connects to ownership, photos, reviews and lead sources.

## When should categories be reviewed or changed?

Review categories when the operating model changes, a service line starts or ends, the website is rebuilt, a profile issue appears or Google changes the available choices. Do not flip labels to chase short-term visibility. A category change has an operating reason and an approved record.

### Use change control like a plan revision

Record the existing categories, the proposed change, the supporting pages, the approver and the public result. Check the profile after Google processes the edit. If you stop offering a service, remove the category and update the website, directory and intake language in the same pass.

Our agents inventory current categories, compare them with approved site content and prepare a mismatch list. People confirm the business model, review Google's current choices and approve every edit.

Category accuracy depends on place accuracy. The [service areas article](/articles/local-presence/service-areas-for-builders/) keeps coverage grounded in lot and warranty capacity. [Profile consistency checks](/articles/local-presence/builder-profile-consistency/) carry a change across every listing. The [local presence hub](/articles/local-presence/) connects the full maintenance system.

## Questions about profile categories for builders

### Should we copy a competitor's categories?

Choose builder profile categories from your own contracts and current services. A competitor may have a different operating model or unsupported category choices.

### Does adding more categories create better inquiries?

Additional builder profile categories do not guarantee suitable inquiries. Each selected category should describe a real service with supporting pages and an intake owner.

### Can the primary category change later?

Before changing a builder profile primary category, check current options with Google Business Profile Help. Document the operating reason and verify the public result.

### Should a one-time project become a category?

A one-time builder project does not establish an ongoing service line. Confirm that the company intends, staffs and documents the service before selecting a category.
